How to use our Primary Schools Directory

Primary schools listed in this category will display the suburb or area that they are in, below the name of the school. To refine your search further you may click the ‘search by suburb’ dropdown menu to find the suburb you’re looking for. If a school interests you, by clicking on the name of the school you will find more information about what they have to offer.

What syllabus do government schools in South Africa use?

SA primary and high schools use the CAPS curriculum. Some private schools follow this syllabus as well but may employ different teaching methods to convey the lessons. CAPS stands for Curriculum Assessment Policy Statements which simply put means that teachers have concise guides on what to teach and assess on a grade-by-grade and subject-by-subject basis. So content and subject matter is set by the Department of Education.

Private schools that do not follow the CAPS syllabus usually choose their own syllabus to follow and will implement their own methods of teaching as well. Some private primary schools may have a religious basis for their education system, others may follow the Cambridge system and some have developed their very own syllabuses.

What factors to consider when choosing a primary school

The main consideration is affordability. Private schools in South Africa can be quite expensive compared to the former model C schools. Purely government schools are mostly funded by the government so fees are usually very minimal.

The location of a chosen primary school is important in terms of time getting there and back and whether it is possible to arrange transport or lift clubs to and from the school. Traffic can drain children if they’re travelling for a long period of time or have to wait for a while after school for transport services so bare these in mind.

If your child is interested in a specific extra mural activity make sure to find out if this is offered at the school you’re considering. Having the extra mural included in what you pay for is great so that you don’t have to register additionally for separate activities and take time to do those as well.

Also think about which high school you were deciding to send your child to. Some primary schools are feeder schools to specific high schools and this may help you make your choice.

If your child has any special needs, then perhaps a special needs school focusing on the development of children with those needs is a better option.
