Who we are
Every day in schools across the country, teachers and children are in the act of imagining themselves into the future. But what kind of future should we prepare for?
There’s no way of knowing what world our children will inherit. At Mimosa we believe the future can be better by working together for tomorrow, today.
We re-imagine education. We are a learning community that grows problem-solving, creativity and collaboration, emotional resilience and intelligence, and cultural flexibility.
Mimosa is a pre-primary and foundation phase at the foot of the SABC tower in Auckland Park, Johannesburg.
Our philosophy of education
Mimosa is a school inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach. What this means in terms of our teaching and learning practice is that our curriculum is emergent: it draws on our immediate context, children’s interests, and what we as a learning community believe to be important. Children and teachers research the world together, and areas of investigation often have a connecting theme – like movement, identity, citizenship, or storytelling. As children explore and develop their ideas, they’re encouraged to express themselves through a variety of creative media – through drawing, light and shadow, dance, music, clay, painting (what we call ‘the 100 languages’ of children). Part of the teacher’s role is to document these investigations and share this documentation so that children, teachers and parents can all be active participants in the learning process.
Foundation phase
We offer a comprehensive Grade 0 programme that is linked to our foundation phase. We opened our foundation phase with a small Grade 1 class in 2017, growing to Grade 2 in 2018 and on to Grade 3 in 2019. While we follow the CAPS curriculum, our learning programme is flexible, following the children’s interests, and encouraging enquiry and creative thinking.
I’m interested. What next?
