The Johannesburg Academy for Theatre Arts offers quality tuition for children and teens in all aspects of the performing arts and presents group classes in diverse forms of dance as well as drama classes and individualized acting and singing coaching. JATA aims to equip future practitioners of theatre arts with all the necessary skills required of the professional triple threat performer but all our students experience the outstanding benefits of training in the arts – enhanced self-esteem and confidence, improved social skills as well as strengthened problem-solving and generative thinking abilities.
All our instructors are accredited teachers and/or industry professionals with unsurpassed knowledge and experience in their area of expertise. JATA also affords our students many opportunities to perform on stage, taking part in various eisteddfods, competitions and festivals throughout the year as well as staging our annual showcase at the Joburg Theatre.

JATA offers Musical Theatre Holiday Clubs to keep our young performers entertained over holiday periods. These week-long clubs are very well attended and the clubbers present a performance for friends and family at the end of the week to showcase what they have learnt.
JATA offers open dance classes for those looking for alternative ways to keep fit or to hone their existing skills.
Paul Rabenowitz from The Assembly Improv runs Intro to Improv and Clowning workshops on Wednesday evenings and weekends.
There is also an 'Acting for Adults' enrichment course which takes place on Saturday afternoons with Renos Spanoudes as the facilitator.

My niece recently attended the JATA holiday programme, and she absolutely loved it! The ethos of the programme truly shines through, as it focuses on fostering creativity, confidence, and artistic development in every child. She had the opportunity to explore her imagination, develop her voice, and build connections with others in a nurturing environment. The programme’s combination of fun movements, singing, dancing, and storytelling really allowed her to express herself. It’s clear that JATA is all about empowering children, making them feel valued, inspired, and confident in their potential, all while nurturing a love for the arts. My two daughters have been attending JATA for the past three years, and it has been an amazing experience. The instructors are talented and dedicated, fostering a supportive environment where creativity thrives. My daughters have grown in both skill and confidence. The academy's regular exhibitions give students the chance to showcase their work, which has greatly boosted my daughters' self-esteem and they love performing at theatre for a huge audience . I highly recommend JATA for any young artist looking to develop their talents in a nurturing community.

Firstly, this is an amazing and constructive facility that kids really respond to and does an amazing job of pushing the kids to improve while maintaining a friendly and happy environment. Secondly, your kid doesn't need to be gifted or keen to become a performer. There is a class for all levels and all interests. My son attended hip hop classes from age 7 to 11 and had a ball. While having fun he also learnt about discipline and practice, confidence to stand up and do your best, and how to follow choreography. For anyone looking for a constructive extramural that isn't sport or chess based, this is a great option. It is also a great space with amazing teachers and administrators, and a facility that really deserves to be supported.

JATA absolutely knows theatre and this is evident in their annual showcase where all the dancers get an opportunity to perform in a theatre, on stage, in front of an audience. The show is so entertaining and JATA's teachers really are talented and creative making this dance school a must for young performers.

I have a lot of amazing things to say about Anitra and Ami and what they have done for my girls. I work for a Child and Youth Care Centre based in Joburg and 13 of my girls attend ballet, hip-hop, singing and drama at Jata. My girls have gained not only different skills but confidence in themselves. Being a child who stays in a CYCC tends to make one feel different from the rest but these classes mean a lot to my girls.
My girls feel part of an amazing community and they always look forward to Jata classes, I have been taught a few ballet moves myself😅

JATA is the best dance/drama/music school for kids. Kids are taught a proper curriculum with exams but they are also inspired to love the arts and explore other disciplines as well. At JATA, you will find every demographic and body type. Kids are nurtured in the best way by teachers who are passionate about the arts and teaching. It truly is an exceptional school.

Sing, dance and act! Kids will have the time of their lives while learning more about performing arts and gaining skills for life.
Stand a chance to win a place at one of the Musical Theatre Holiday Clubs being presented by JATA from both the Linden, Randburg and Stoneridge, East Rand campuses in the upcoming holiday, Jun 30- Jul 4 2025. Winner must be 6-14 years.
The clubs are aimed at all school-going children, divided into Minis and Juniors. They focus on co-ordination, musicality, expression, voice projection, improvisation and performance. Look forward to doing dance routines, learning songs and creating scenes. No previous experience in the various disciplines is necessary- facilitators work within the children’s individual and unique abilities.
Families will enjoy a showcase performance at the end of the week, especially for those who attended the full week. While these workshops encourage youngsters to become triple-threat performers by combining acting, dancing and singing skills, natural by-products of theatrical training include enhanced self-esteem and confidence, improved social skills as well as strengthened problem-solving and generative thinking abilities. But, most importantly, it's loads of FUN!
