Sterkfontein Caves

The ancient dolomite caves, with an underground lake, an hour from Johannesburg, is one of the fossils sites in the Cradle of Humankind and is part of the World Heritage Site. The Sterkfontein Caves are recognised as one of the world's most important palaeontological sites, having yielded many fossils dating millions of years ago. Among the most famous finds are Little Foot and Mrs Ples. As the caves are a living entity, visitors are allowed into certain areas of the caves with a guide. Therefore guided tours run every half hour and it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and clothes and carry as little as possible with you. It is fun, exciting and informative to be inside the caves and the children will enjoy it immensely.
