Roodepoort Museum
Roodepoort Museum displays kick off with information panels illustrating the history of Roodepoort, with particular focus on the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand in 1884 by the Struben Brothers. The real magic starts when you arrive on a reconstructed 19th century Farm House. Here you experience what life was like before the discovery of gold. The immense social and economic turnabout caused by the discovery of gold is evident when you walk through the Victorian House. Everything in abundance! A second mayor turning point in Roodepoort’s history came after World War I. New fashion trends and technological advancements, such as electricity and radio broadcasting, are illustrated in the 1920s and 1930s lounges. All the displays are filled with authentic artifacts from the relevant eras. The museum is well known for it’s superb collection of decorative arts and attention to detail in its displays.
The museum is wheelchair friendly, with a variety of restaurants and shops nearby.
