Education center offering home schooling & unschooling for gr 4–12 in all subjects
We offer small classes to ensure each learner gets individual attention. We encourage independent learning and intrinsic motivation with facilitators and tutors to help learners achieve their goals. From gr4–9 we focus mainly on study methods as well as reading, comprehension, writing and Maths skills. Gr.10 – 12 is all about getting learners ready for their final year. Gr10–12 are seen as different years to the same course and everything we do is with preparation for the final exams in mind.
We at Sandra’s House believe that every learner has the right to the best education where their individuality is nurtured and educational, psychological and emotional needs are met. Education is more than doing well in tests and exams. We aim to teach learners important life skills, increase general knowledge and encourage reading. For older learners we also offer career counseling, help with university applications and arrange job shadowing to ensure learners are ready for life after school. Each individual’s difficulties and learning styles are taken into account to ensure that the learning and teaching methods suits their needs. Outings are an important part of learning and we take learners on at least one outing per term. We give weekly updates to parents on progress in schoolwork and general behavior.
Who are we and why choose us?
Sandra’s House was established in 2015 by Sandra Kruger. She completed gr.12 at Linden Hoërskool in 2002 and started working as a tutor in 2003. Sandra has worked as tutor and private teacher for grades 1-12 at several different schools teaching Afrikaans, English, Geography, Maths, Life Science, Business Studies, Tourism and History. She is a qualified teacher with a BA degree in Psychology (UJ), PGCE (Unisa) and BA. Hon. in Afrikaans (UCT). During her years of tutoring she gave lessons at a rehabilitation center for teenagers and counseled learners struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. She has also helped learners with study choices and coping with trauma. She has experience with gr. R – 12 learners with Autism, ADD/ADHD, Dyslexia, Epilepsy and hard of hearing students.
Mauritz Preller was ‘unschooled’ and completed gr 12 through self-study. He enjoys studying and has completed numerous auto-dietetic courses through various online platforms such as Coursera. Amongst others, he completed courses in Economics and Sociology though UC Berkley and Astronomy though CALTech. Mauritz has worked as tutor and researcher at UCT since 2009. He has experience teaching Maths, Science, Biology and IT.
