National Children's Theatre

National Children’s Theatre is the foremost theatre organization in Gauteng, shining the bright light of educational, engaging and award-winning theatre for children and youth throughout South African cities and rural areas, to rapturous reviews from children, parents and the media.

We present live theatre year-round at our renowned 4.5-acre campus in Johannesburg, which includes two indoor theatres, one outdoor theatre, a puppet theater, music room, and classrooms for the weekend workshop academy.

NCT: Enchanting. Inspiring. Empowering.

Reaching more children through the arts

NCT is incomparable in Gauteng, and in many parts of South Africa, not only for its breadth of services and for reaching many children who otherwise would not ever see live performance.

We’ve had a vital impact on Gauteng’s children (and their families) since COVID-19 as the only theatre presenting children’s plays during this time. We’ve also welcomed more than 1000 children from home and orphanages.

NCT is thrilled to present the story of how one of the most beloved children's stories of all time, the story of Peter Rabbit, came to be written. It’s a happy production filled with fun, adventure and, of course, with Peter in the story, a load of mischief! Join young Beatrix Potter and her brave brother as they each wish for something different to happen in their lives. Her brother hates the idea of going off to boarding school. Beatrix is sad that her best friend, her brother, is being sent off while she is stuck in the dreary nursery room with her governess. Fortunately she is a resourceful child and is able to make the most of her boring and dispiriting nursery and the restrictions of the way wealthy families brought up their children in the 1800s, to another world where imagination can run riot. So Beatrix enjoys spending her time creating adventures for Peter and his family. And Peter does have adventures, and does get into trouble! Fortunately, Beatrix is in charge of the story and is able to plan his rescue: all is under control.

Themes: No matter our circumstances, we can not only think up an alternate world with a little imagination, and we can implement it too. "It's fun to have fun, but you have to know how."

The play is performed by a versatile cast, directed by Ivor Jones, set and costumes by Sarah Roberts, musical direction by Christine Ludwig, lighting by Jane Gosnell, and stage managed by Sinenhlanhla Zwane.

In April 2023 award winning director Alan Swerdlow created a masterful production of The Hobbit at National Children’s Theatre. The show just won the 2024 Naledi Award for best children and youth production--and is back by popular demand. Come see NCT's fantastic fchildren’s version based on the story by English author J. R. R. Tolkien. It was published in 1937 to wide critical acclaim—it remains popular and is recognized as a classic in children’s literature. NCT's one-hour version is a suspenseful, fast-moving journey through Middle Earth by the home-loving hobbit, Bilbo Baggins.

When Gandalf the Wizard knocks at Bilbo’s door, bringing with him Thorin Oakenshield, eleven ragged looking dwarfs, and a contract for an adventure to recover the lost treasure of Lonely Mountain, now guarded by Smaug the dragon, Bilbo could not be less interested—at first. But Bilbo is persuaded and before he knows it, he’s off on a quest over a mountain and under hill, through caves and forests until the final resolution, not only for Bilbo but for all the Hobbits who inhabit Middle Earth. This endearing story is about personal growth: maturity, competence, and wisdom and applying one’s wits and common sense, heroism, and understanding how greed destroys the human soul.
