There are three different riding programmes available at the EARTH Centre which should be chosen according to you / your child’s needs and abilities.
This is a riding programme for the physically abled and which caters for riders with special needs. Our experienced instructors teach classical style dressage and jumping lessons from beginner to intermediate level. Our instructors aim to provide a solid knowledge base with excellent practical on-the-ground horse skills and riding skills for all of our riders. Horse riding can assist children with dyslexia, low and high muscle tone, sensory integration issues, and slow learning among other special needs. Applicants to the programme will need to meet certain criteria before being accepted, which will be determined by the Head Instructor.
This is a six month programme that offers remedial riding for the development of foundational skills in children who have difficulty with concentration, integration of the brain hemispheres, co-ordination or have high and low muscle tone. The programmes assists with delayed development, through improving gross and fine motor skills and sensory stimulation. Participants will also learn the basics of riding. The programme runs for six months from enrolment as this time period allows us to run through a specific set of skills. Repetition of the programme or enrolment in another programme can be discussed once Equitherapy is complete.
This programme is for people with a variety of disabilities such as Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Foetal Alcohol Syndrome, Visual and Hearing impairments, Spina Bifida, and Genetic Disorders, where the focus is on the primary benefits derived from the therapy, as such this programme is tailored to individual needs. This programme is best for those with more restrictive disabilities, low functioning autism and non-verbal riders that cannot follow instructions. The programme runs on either a 12 week riding block or a six month programme depending on the rider. Continuation can be discussed after the programme time period has been reached. There are certain contra-indications to horse riding which will be assessed before riding. Some sponsorships are available for this programme.
Your first lesson is normally an assessment lesson (Contact us to discuss fees). Riding slots are 30 minutes, unless you are participating in an EduRide group lesson.
We do have approved hard hats for riding that may be used, however this will be at your own risk. We suggest the rider wears a pair of comfortable long pants and a shoe with a heel (e.g. a school shoe or riding boot).
