If you’re looking for something to do that’s indoors, beats the cold and bends your mind, then you have got to check out the Museum of Illusions Joburg at the Zone at Rosebank. We were lucky enough to attend the launch of the museum and boy was it an experience! It’s jam-packed with trickery at every corner. Featuring a variety of rooms and installations as well as a party room, this is an ideal family outing.
Playing tricks on your mind!
Illusion rooms will have you doubting what you’re experiencing. The Kaleidoscope was the perfect room to shoot a music video in with its moving display of shapes and colours. There were rooms to make you feel like a giant or a tiny goblin and one that went on for infinity. The Vortex Tunnel was a pure test for the brain, making you feel like the bridge was moving, not for the faint-hearted. The Beuchet Chair makes a person appear to tower over the other and another had your head on a platter.
Many of the illusions work when seen through your phone camera and the museum is designed for a generation of social media users who love every opportunity to take cool photos of themselves.
Not only is this an ingenius fun outing but its also an edutainment centre that teaches all the science of optical illusions.
Optical Illusions
All around the museum you will find graphic displays that will blow your mind. Stand at a distance or close up, turn your head or align your camera in a specific way to get the full impact of what you’re looking at. Nothing is as it seems at this museum!
There are definitely moments when it takes longer for your brain and eyes to come together to see the ‘big picture’. It’s amazing how perception is challenged and your spacial awareness is questioned.
