Magalies Canopy Tour – taking fun to new heights

With my roots dug deep in the soils of Mpumalanga, I am forever nostalgic for the smell of pines, for fresh air and just about any natural experience. These soul feeding experiences are hard to come by in the city. Often, I need to cut out the noise, and step into nature to find my equilibrium. And, as a mother of four, I am constantly in search of venues that offer the same for my family.

Magalies Canopy Tours proved to be one of those soul fulfilling, yet exhilarating experiences that definitely left its mark in our memory boxes. Whilst zip-lining and foefie slides seem to be getting popular in the cities, this venue offers the real Tarzan and Jane feel.

The drive and getting set…

The 90min drive from Johannesburg seemed endless with clouds looming above and thunderstorms threatening.  However, the venue itself was blessed with overcast weather, perfect for the activities. Met by friendly hosts and guides, we were soon whisked away to be briefed and prepped for the adventure.

Helmets on, harness secure, light meals ordered, and registration (on I-pads of course), brave faces, heart pulsating, we’re all set to go. We did miss a locker for all loose items and valuables, but luckily the receptionist offered to keep these for us. Of course a photographer was assigned to capture all the fun.

On your marks….

Holding tight to the rails on the 4×4 was proof enough of the anxiety within. The guides pointed out various inhabitant flora – the aloe peglarae, and 3 types of proteas being the most exquisite. They were outsmarted by the kids in a quiz – enough to provide distraction and get friendly with all.

GO..

A short walk to the platform, and we were all lined up and ready to swing. 6 year old, enthusiast, backed out at the top, and was ever grateful to Thami for allowing him to hitch on to his back. 8 year old brave-heart enjoyed the first three zips- but then opted for guide’s assistance, more-so because he was lightweight. If ever there was a perk to being weighty, then this is it – the heavier you are the less chance there is of you getting stuck in the middle. Whoa! With the help of the guides it was easy for each – Adrenalin seeker 11 yr old always in the lead of her risk calculating brothers, and forcing a brave face from mum and dad. Wobbly feet, shrieks from groups ahead, and then smiles and cheers from the smallies made it all worthwhile!

The reward…

A light lunch in the tranquil gardens made for some great throwbacks to a great adventure. The digital collection of this memorable adventure awaited us at the reception – memories we would treasure forever.

A few pointers:

Value for money?

This is the kind of experience you definitely won’t get in the City. With speculation of an upcoming paintball arena, and quad bikes etc, this is an adventure park definitely worth the visit. Find updated costs on the Jozikids website, and be sure to look out for special deals.

Fit for all?

My kids (aged 6,8,11,14) were probably more fearless than both my husband and I. The guides are superb at keeping a watch on all and settling all anxieties whilst encouraging as well.

If you are fit enough to walk through the local supermarket, then you have this under the belt- no minimum level of fitness required.

Party worthy?

Of course! Big and small – this venue ticks all boxes. Food, entertainment and venue… the all-in-one package – with no fuss and loads of fun.

Getting the team in sync…

Look no further. The Canopy tour will unnerve the team enough to keep them riding, gliding and soaring together for a while.
