When I was invited to review this movie, I was asked to bring my grandson along, and he was absolutely enthralled. This show is just too sweet! But besides being the last word in awesomeness for kids, it features some brilliant humour and nuances that the moms and dads will appreciate. Add to that, the catchy music, and the whole family will be bopping in their seats.
The movie is computer animated, produced by Illumination, released by Universal Pictures, and features an all-star voice cast, including Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth McFarlane and Scarlett Johansen, amongst others.
Spectacularly the movie features 85 classic songs!
“Sing” is set in a world inhabited by animals with human traits, going about their business as humans do. The central character is Buster Moon, a cute Koala Bear, with big dreams. He has been fascinated with the theatre since his dad took him to a show when he was a child. He now owns the Moon Theatre, which sadly is not doing very well and the bank, represented by a stern Llama, is threatening to foreclose on him. He decides to host a singing show, fashioned on shows like Idols, where the winner will win $1000 prize.
However his whacky secretary, a dithering old Iguana accidently types out the fliers, inviting the animals to come and audition, with a glaring error. The prize money being $100 000! The wind blows the fliers out of the window before either of them can spot the error.
The animals flock to audition in their droves! And Buster finally picks a selection of talented wannabe stars to compete for the prize. Among them a pig named Rosita, a teenage elephant named Meena, a white rat named Mike, a British Gorilla named Johnny and a porcupine named Ash. Each have their own style and their own issues and problems, which makes for a hilarious adventure.
Enter Buster’s wealthy friend Eddie the sheep, and his snooty, former singing star, stinking rich nana, and you’ve got a winner.
The music… the animation… the effects… all superb!
Take the kids! You won’t regret it.
