The Big 5 at the Joburg Zoo
Visit Joburg Zoo to find lion, leopard, rhino, African elephant and African buffalo up close, knowing that the Zoo is internationally accredited and maintains a high standard of animal welfare and ethical conduct to safeguard the well-being of all its animals in its care.
The Animals of the Amazon at the Joburg Zoo.
Wander down darkened tunnels in this newly opened exhibition centre to find gigantic yellow anacondas, Amazon tree boa constrictors, Honduras milk snakes, curly-haired tarantulas, green iguanas, moustached emperor tamarin monkeys and poison dart frogs. It also has a walk-through aquarium with many red-data species.
This is the 6th themed section at the zoo. Others include: Animals of Africa; The Heart of Africa; Southern Safari;Extreme Environments, which showcases animals living in extreme temperatures; the Farm Yard; and the Spice Route. There’s something for everyone!
Day and Night Tours
The Zoo offers day and night tours that will take you on a special adventure you’ll never forget! Packed with information, these are fun ways to get to know the animals.
Ferry Tour
This is a 90 minute tour on a ferry which stops at 5 main animal complexes. The tour guide treats three of the many animals with a snack. This tour is a hit with birthday parties! Bring your picnic baskets for lunch on one of our many beautifully manicured lawns.

Behind the Scenes tour
Go where only the staff get to go! This walking tour includes 2 animal night rooms, the kitchen and hospital. You get to see how the zoo runs while getting close to some of our wild animals!
Night Tour
Visit the zoo at night and explore the zoo’s active nightlife.
The Joburg Zoo offers 3 types of night tours:
Sunset tour (4pm – 6:30pm)
Moonlight tour (5:15pm – 8pm)
Night tour (6:15pm – 9pm)
Zoo Snooze
Come rough-it on an overnight campout at Johannesburg Zoo. Get treated to Behind – the- Scenes and Night Tour ending off with a bonfire. Times: Saturday 2:30pm – Sunday 8am. Booking is essential.
Adopt an Animal
Add a wild new branch to your family tree! Adopt your favourite animal through the Adopt an Animal programme. Your symbolic adoption supports the Zoo’s animal welfare, housing & enrichment. Minimum contribution is R300.
The program also allows you to gift the adoption to family and friends – a special way to support the Zoo and interact with the animals they are crazy about!

Covid-19 Update for Joburg Zoo
In an effort to keep you and our animals safe, here are a few things to consider:
– Face masks to be worn at all times.
– Please bring your own sanitisers and cloths/wipes.
– Practice social distancing and do not mix with people outside your family/group.
– Use of the gym and playground is prohibited.
– Picnicking is allowed for groups of 10 people or less.
– The zoo ferries will not be operational.
– Normal zoo rules still apply. Refrain from touching surfaces and please do not feed the animals.
