Online applications for Grade 1 & 8 for 2023
According to an announcement made by the Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi, on 9 May 2022, the application process for all learners applying for Gr 1 & 8 in 2023 will begin on 22 July at 8am and close at midnight on 19 August 2022.
Dates to remember:
Online applications for Gr 1 & 8:
- 8am on 22 July – midnight on 19 August 2022
SMS notifications about successful school placements:
- 3 – 31 October 2022
Exceptions:
- Applications: 20 May – 26 August 2022. Placements: 20 June – 9 September 2022.
- Applications: 1 June – 19 August 2022 (see procedure in notes below)
Online application procedure & conditions
The annual online application procedure has been improved and finetuned. Details of how to apply will be communicated to you timeously.
The MEC outlined the following procedures and conditions for parents to take note of in preparation for their applications later this year:

Who must apply?
Grade R learners will not automatically be accepted to Grade 1 without an application even if they apply to the schools they are currently attending
ALL learners that are
- 5 years old turning 6 years old by 30 June 2023,
- are currently enrolled in Grade R in a school or ECD centre.
- learners that are not in any type of school
ALL learners must apply for admission at a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 schools.
Schools of Specialisation applications start in May
Schools of Specialisation conduct admission tests, written assessments, trials and auditions 20 May – 26 August 2022. The outcome of these tests and trials will be communicated to applicants from 20 June 2022 – 9 September 2022. The dept urges parents to accompany their children to these tests and trials to complete the process.
Boarding School applications start in June
Parents and guardians applying to boarding schools in Gauteng must apply directly at identified boarding schools from 1 June – 19 August 2022

Placement will be conducted as per the following admission regulations:
· Home address within feeder zone
· Siblings
· Work address
· Within 30 km Radius
· Beyond 30km Radius
Documents required
Certified copies of the following documents must be uploaded or submitted within 7 days of applying:
· Parent and Child ID or Passport
· Refugee Permit
· Asylum Seeker Permit
· Permanent Residence Permit
· Study Permit
· South African Birth Certificate
· Proof of Home Address
· Proof of Work Address
· Latest School Report and Clinic Card/Immunisation Report (Grade 1 only)
