Nothing for Mahala is one of the best movies I have seen this year. I honestly cannot see anyone not enjoying this hilarious and heartwarming local comedy.
It’s the story of Axe Gumede (Played by Thapelo Mokoena), who is a great example of a Yuppie, or so he would like to think. He works for a property broking company in Johannesburg and definitely has the gift of the gab. He has an upmarket apartment (albeit sans furniture), a flashy Merc sports car, wears designer clothes and for all intents and purposes has made it!
So, what is Axe’s problem?
Axe is living way beyond his means and is heavily in debt!
He is being pursued by a debt collector (Played by Desmond Dube) and his sidekick (Played by Casper de Vries) And although the results are hysterically funny, Axe finds himself in hot water with the law, whilst trying to evade them, and is sentenced to 200 hours of community service, to be served at an old folks home.
He thinks its going to be a breeze, until he meets the gorgeous, but no nonsense Reneilwe, (played by Mmabatho Monthsho) who makes it abundantly clear that things will be done her way, or she will not give him credit for any of the hours worked. In addition, Axe makes the dubious acquaintance of a grumpy old man named Hendrik (played by Marius Weyers) who makes it his mission to annoy Axe as much as possible. However, through circumstances. the two become unlikely buddies and end up helping one another in the most unexpected ways.
To complicate matters, Axe’s ruthless boss (played by Jamie Bartlett) is hounding him to close a deal that is rapidly going sour, with wealthy businessman, Mr Molefe (played by Kenneth Nkosi), in order to secure a partnership at the firm. And, he is in competition with the wily, butt licking, great looking Pule (played by Shoki Mokgapa) for the position. Her mission is to show Axe up for the scum bag she thinks he is, and this makes for some hilarious scenes.
Add a mixed bag of lovable and very entertaining residents at the home, none of whom are playing with a completely full deck, and you have a really awesome movie!
Love, sadness and some bitter sweet life lessons revolving around the theme that there are more important things than money, status and possessions, all combine to make this a “must see” show.
The movie was written by Darrel Bristow-Bovey, directed by Rolie Nikiwe, and produced by Ronnie Apteker.
I think the humour will fly over the heads of the little ones but teens and adults will love the movie.
