Egoli – Place of Gold

Did you know that Johannesburg is also known as the “place of Gold”? Egoli is an iSizulu name referring to the fact that 40% of the world’s gold reserves have been found in the area. Johannesburg is fondly known as Joburg or Jozi and has a population of approximately 4.4 million people. OR Tambo International Airport is said to be the busiest airport on the continent of Africa! With South Africa being a melting pot of different cultures, traditions and ethnic groups, Gauteng is sure to attract any traveller and local tourists to experience the sights, smells, tastes and feel of a bustling metropolis.

Historical and art museums

Contemporary and historical art from South Africa as well as art from West and Central Africa can be found at the Wits Art Museum. The museum hosts regular programs and art exhibitions and is popular with Johannesburg’s art connoisseurs. The museum is part of the Wits University Cultural Precinct, just three blocks from Nelson Mandela Bridge. The gallery is also situated among interesting shops, places to eat and student villages.

Constitution Hill

Guided tours can be arranged beforehand for groups of more than 10 people. This is highly recommended as the information given and the professional manner of the guides adds so much value to the tour. You will get a chance to see the Constitutional Court which is the highest court in South Africa and was born of the country's first democratic Constitution in 1994. Prisoners of the apartheid era were also kept here and a tour of the facilities is a sobering reality of what suffering the era caused to inmates and disadvantaged people of South Africa. A must-see indeed to learn about South Africa's turbulent past and its extraordinary transition to democracy!

Play Africa at Constitution Hill is based in the Old Fort section with exhibits & programs that stimulate physical, cognitive, social, and emotional growth of young children from birth – 10 years.

Oh yes you can! Guided tours of the inner city and its amazing people will leave you in awe. Visit Soweto, Newtown, Braamfontein and other exciting areas of Jozi to learn not only about the past but also about the future and rejuvenation of the city. Fordsburg gives you a look at the ‘Indian’ community in Johannesburg where you can sample delicious foods, find beautiful trinkets and understand more about the settlements created during Apartheid. Newtown and the Maboneng Precinct are vibey hubs which have been rejuvenated in recent years, popular with young professionals and students.
