placemats, pot holders, and a bottle tote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Today&#8217;s DIY Kids project aims to produce a personalised gift for someone you and your children love, such as a grandparent or an aunt. \u00a0There are three gifts in this tutorial arranged in order of skill: \u00a0easy, harder, and challenging!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As the main ingredient, we&#8217;re using an item easily found at a charity shop or in the sale rack at a discount store: \u00a02 quilted placemats. \u00a0By re-purposing these placemats, you can make either a) personalised placemats, b) pot holders, or c) a tote to carry a gift bottle of wine, juice, or olive oil to a party.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">What You&#8217;ll Need<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>2 quilted placemats<\/li>\n<li>fabric paint<\/li>\n<li>a paper plate or a vegetable tray for the paint<\/li>\n<li>sewing machine and\/or needle &amp; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1211\/706;\" data-original-sizes=\"(max-width: 1211px) 100vw, 1211px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Step 3: Create a tote, first in a simple way &#8230;<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A tote is a bag, with or without a handle. \u00a0Start by putting the mats together, printed sides facing in. \u00a0Sew all the way around three sides, leaving one short side open. \u00a0Turn it inside out, and you have a standing bag.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Step 4: A more complicated tote<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">To make an even more professional-looking tote, you could choose to &#8220;box the corners&#8221; at the bottom of the bag and also cut a large handle into each side of the top of the bag.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Boxing the corners means making little bunny ears, sewing across them, and then cutting them off. \u00a0It makes the bottom of the bag flat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">To create a handle, sew a huge buttonhole with your machine: \u00a0zigzag down the long ends, and do a sturdy stitch about 10 times at each tiny end. \u00a0Use a sharp scissors to cut a slit through, where your hand can then go.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-249700 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.jozikids.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/tote-advanced-collage-1.jpg\" alt=\"tote-advanced-collage\" width=\"732\" height=\"1000\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jozikids.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/tote-advanced-collage-1.jpg 732w, https:\/\/www.jozikids.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/tote-advanced-collage-1-220x300.jpg 220w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 732px;
