{"id":4618,"date":"2012-06-11T13:45:34","date_gmt":"2012-06-11T11:45:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jozikids.co.za\/zaparents-blog\/?p=4618"},"modified":"2022-06-23T09:39:04","modified_gmt":"2022-06-23T07:39:04","slug":"being-a-father-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jozikids.co.za\/blog\/parenting\/fatherhood\/being-a-father-2\/","title":{"rendered":"On being a father"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I remember as if it was yesterday, the cold winter morning when I for the first time realised what being responsible for the life of another means.\u00a0\u00a0 I am pretty sure most fathers learn this through the same lesson\u2026 the panicked overcautious drive home from the hospital with your new-born. \u00a0\u00a0Then there\u2019s the chasing to the emergency room at three in the morning when your three month old turns out to have <em>\u201conly\u201d <\/em>a mild tummy bug.<\/p>\n<p>But the blessing so much outweighs the responsibility, the gift of seeing life through their eyes. They have such exuberance for life and want to do everything and do it now!\u00a0 Just yesterday we were cooking, building puzzles and creating Meccano monsters at the same time.\u00a0 The language they use tells you exactly how they\u2019re thinking \u2013 <em>\u201cclothes live in a cupboard, dad\u201d<\/em>.\u00a0 They believe they can do any- and everything and show appreciation and awe with total honesty.\u00a0 Nobody can forget the first time they took their toddler to the zoo, the amazement at every animal they see; the exited shouts and the never-ending questions.\u00a0 They really do want to understand everything and Google-enabled parents they really believe we know everything.\u00a0They give such passionate hugs and when they cry, you cry with them.<\/p>\n<p>In the end being a father is best surmised in the words of Kent Nerburn:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cUntil you have a son of your own&#8230; you will never know the joy, the love beyond feeling that resonates in the heart of a father as he looks upon his son. You will never know the sense of honour that makes a man want to be more than he is and to pass something good and hopeful into the hands of his son.
