So I asked a group of expat ladies I’m part of what actually surprised them about their first kids birthday party in South Africa. Foreign moms find it baffling (“they came to a party and they get a GIFT?”). Local kids find its absence tragic.

But here’s what surprised me most when I asked around: the moms hate them too. “I think it’s a waste of money and rubbish — ours go in the bin after the party, or I collect the sweets to donate,” one told me. “I hate the ones with a million sweets full of colorants.” Another: “If I did a party pack, it was small and eco-friendly.”

So the honest truth isn’t that party packs are compulsory. They’re expected but quietly rebelled against, and the rebellion is winning. Plenty of moms now do one nice thing instead of a sugar avalanche — a cookie, a keyring, stationery, seeds or a little pot plant, a pine-cone bird feeder. Nobody will think less of you. Several will thank you.

Although — one mom told me she hates the concept and loves making them anyway. “Very unhealthy, but I did enjoy it. And no kid feels left out.” Both things are true. One mom said she was genuinely shocked at first when parents asked to take home leftover cake. She got used to it, then grew to enjoy the vibe.

Don’t be thrown by it. Send the extra cake home with someone. Nobody’s being rude, and nobody wants to see food thrown away. And yes: the sugar rush is real and it is extreme. Plan the calm activity for after the sweets, not before.

Invite the whole class (and the clever reason to)

At creche and primary age, the custom leans generous: the whole class gets invited, often 20–30 kids. Partly kindness, partly politics — but there’s smarter logic underneath, and an expat mom put it better than I could:

“If you add food and drinks for adults, party packs for every child, and entertainment, it gets expensive and overwhelming — and that’s when people invite just a few and exclude the rest. So I’d rather do something smaller and include every child in the class.”

That’s the whole secret. Keep it simple and you can afford to include everyone. Go over the top and you’re forced to start cutting the list, which is how kids get left out. A platter and a few drinks is plenty.

And here’s the part I most want a new arrival to know. One mom said it perfectly:

“In those early years the parents attend, and the parties are wonderful community-building events. In a new country, your kid’s parties are where you get your own people. Put out a cheese platter and let it happen.

The gift situation (it’s changing)

The old default – everyone brings a wrapped present – still stands, especially with the little ones. But two newer gifting customs are spreading fast for SA Kids Parties:

First, the class collection: everyone EFTs a set amount (one mom’s Grade 4 class does R250 each) to the class mom, and the birthday child gets one big voucher instead of thirty toys. Second, brought in largely by expat families, “no gifts please” on the invitation — a push against overconsumption that plenty of local parents are grateful for.

And secondly, if you’re unsure what to bring, just ask the parent what the child wants or needs. Nobody finds that rude here.

RSVPs

Some parents are excellent. “RSVP was standard, 90% of people responded,” one mom told me.
