{"id":2882,"date":"2011-02-22T21:43:48","date_gmt":"2011-02-22T19:43:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jozikids.co.za\/zaparents-blog\/?p=2882"},"modified":"2022-01-06T12:04:30","modified_gmt":"2022-01-06T10:04:30","slug":"brilliant-remake-of-the-classic-western-true-grit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jozikids.co.za\/blog\/lifestyle\/movie-reviews\/brilliant-remake-of-the-classic-western-true-grit\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cTrue Grit\u201d brilliant remake of the classic western"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>\u00a0<\/em>I remember my dad taking me to see the John Wayne\/Kim Derby version of True Grit in the late sixties.\u00a0 My mom didn\u2019t do westerns so I was the lucky winner of a ticket to the Cowboys and Indians offerings of the sixties.<\/p>\n<p>Strangely enough, I LOVED True Grit and still remember the movie, even though it was over 30 years ago.\u00a0 So, of course, I eagerly awaited the Coen Bothers remake of this classic, and needless to say, I was not disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>Set in the 1870\u2019s, in Frontier America, Charles Portis\u2019 tale is narrated by Mattie Ross (played by fabulous newcomer Hayley Steinfeld).\u00a0 The feisty 14-year old arrives in Fort Smith, Arkansas, to collect her murdered father\u2019s belongings.\u00a0 She is also determined to see her father\u2019s killer, Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin) brought to justice.<\/p>\n<p>Mattie hires the notoriously ruthless US Marshal, Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges), to help her hunt Chaney down, and insists on accompanying the drunken, trigger happy, \u201crough around the edges\u201d Cogburn, despite his best efforts to dissuade her.<\/p>\n<p>Already on the trail of Chaney is a Texas Ranger, LaBoeuf (pronounced La Beef) (played by Matt Damon), and Cogburn and Mattie\u2019s path crosses LaBoeuf\u2019s on the trail, into Indian Country. All three are determined, courageous and outspoken and the result is a sometimes sad, but more often hilarious story!<\/p>\n<p>Mattie\u2019s unrelenting spirit and her innocent, yet insolent character will definitely charm young and old alike.\u00a0 And, Bridges Oscar Nomination performance, and Damon\u2019s good looks and brilliant portrayal of LeBouef make this movie an absolute must see.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s teens will probably say \u201cThank goodness we were not born in the American Frontier in the 1870s\u201d, and appreciate the high tech world they have been raised in even more!<\/p>\n<p>Age restrictions:\u00a0 From 13yrs.
