{"id":1930,"date":"2010-06-19T23:33:56","date_gmt":"2010-06-19T21:33:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jozikids.co.za\/zaparents-blog\/?p=1930"},"modified":"2022-06-23T10:02:56","modified_gmt":"2022-06-23T08:02:56","slug":"making-fun-out-of-nothing-with-nikki-bush-week-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jozikids.co.za\/blog\/activities-and-outings\/diy-activities\/making-fun-out-of-nothing-with-nikki-bush-week-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Week 2 : Making fun out of nothing with Nikki Bush"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are a number of benefits to being a proactive source of magic, wonder and surprise for your children every now and again:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They will respect you<\/li>\n<li>They will enjoy being in your company<\/li>\n<li>They will stop pestering you so much to do things with you because you have taken control and are being proactive in this regard.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are three ideas for this week which are simple to do and don\u2019t require much in the way of specialised equipment or ingredients.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Eezi peezi paper puzzles<\/h2>\n<p>Making their own puzzles is a fantastic and inexpensive way of keeping children busy and entertained because they can make as many as they like, and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jozikids.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/paper-puzzles-1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1934 size-full\" title=\"paper puzzles 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jozikids.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/paper-puzzles-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jozikids.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/paper-puzzles-1.jpg 266w, https:\/\/www.jozikids.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/paper-puzzles-1-231x300.jpg 231w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/><\/a> they get to choose their own pictures too.\u00a0 Any bold and colourful picture will do the trick, whether from magazines or personal photographs printed out on the computer.\u00a0 The number of pieces and size of the pieces you decide to make will depend on the age of the child.<\/p>\n<h3>You will need:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>1 large photo or magazine picture (A4 or A5 is best)<\/li>\n<li>Cardboard (just normal school project cardboard)<\/li>\n<li>Glue<\/li>\n<li>Ruler<\/li>\n<li>Pencil\/pen\/khoki<\/li>\n<li>Scissors (blunt nose for preschoolers)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What to do:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Stick the picture onto the piece of cardboard so that the cardboard forms a frame around the picture.<\/li>\n<li>Using the ruler and pencil\/pen\/khoki draw cut lines onto the picture (please do this for, or help the under 6\u2019s).<\/li>\n<li>For 2 and 3 year olds cut the pictures into two and four pieces.\u00a0 You can cut them into smaller pieces as your child masters the puzzle.\u00a0 A six year old should be able to do <em>at least<\/em> a 24 piece puzzle for school readiness.\u00a0 As you are working off photographic material here the level of difficulty is higher than if you were working off a clear children\u2019s puzzle picture.<\/li>\n<li>As you child masters the use of scissors and cutting accurately along a line, he\/she can cut out the puzzle themselves (should be able to do this sometime between 4 and 5 years of age).<\/li>\n<li>Make the activity more challenging for older children by cutting up the puzzles into more pieces or irregular shapes that fit together.\u00a0 This then becomes more of a problem solving, brain-teaser type activity.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Stick puppets<\/h2>\n<p>Now here\u2019s creativity on the run.\u00a0 Next time your children have ice-creams or ice-lollies, keep the sticks (or ask you GP for a couple of tongue <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jozikids.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/STICK-PUPPETS.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1935 lazyload\" title=\"STICK PUPPETS\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.jozikids.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/STICK-PUPPETS-127x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"520\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/520;\" \/><\/a>depressors at the next visit, pharmacies stock them too). With a few khoki pens you can create some really fun stick puppets in just a minute or two.\u00a0 No gluing, no sewing, no cutting.<\/p>\n<h3>You will need:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Wooden ice lolly sticks \/ tongue depressors<\/li>\n<li>Khoki pens<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What to do:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Give the ice lolly sticks a good wash and let them dry completely.\u00a0 No need to do so with unused tongue depressors.<\/li>\n<li>Take your khoki pens and draw eyes, nose and mouth, using different facial expressions on each stick.\u00a0 Add details such as hair, glasses, a necklace or a tie, etc. (older children can do all this themselves, parents of preschools will have to get more involved).<\/li>\n<li>If you have enough sticks you can create your family for your child to play with, or a bunch of characters for a little play. Write the names of the characters on the back of the puppets to help the puppeteer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Marshmallow sandwiches<\/h2>\n<p>Surprise your children with a fascinating, no-bake treat.\u00a0 They will just love watching you create these Marshmallow Sandwiches.\u00a0 Do try one first so that you can judge when they are cool enough to eat.<\/p>\n<h3>You will need:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jozikids.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/MARIE-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1936 size-medium lazyload\" title=\"MARIE 2\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.jozikids.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/MARIE-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jozikids.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/MARIE-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.jozikids.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/MARIE-2-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.jozikids.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/MARIE-2.jpg 1024w\" data-sizes=\"auto\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/225;\" data-original-sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Marie biscuits<\/li>\n<li>Marshmallows<\/li>\n<li>Microwave<\/li>\n<li>Microwaveable plate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What to do:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Place a marshmallow on the centre of a Marie Biscuit on a plate in the microwave oven.
