{"id":14903,"date":"2017-07-28T09:52:06","date_gmt":"2017-07-28T07:52:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/responsive.jozikids.co.za\/zaparents\/?p=14903"},"modified":"2022-06-22T12:03:06","modified_gmt":"2022-06-22T10:03:06","slug":"technoteens-should-we-battle-against-or-work-with-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jozikids.co.za\/blog\/education\/coding-robotics-science\/technoteens-should-we-battle-against-or-work-with-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Technoteens: Should we battle against or work with it?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We hear parents complaining about this all the time: My teen is constantly on their phone, their phone is attached to their hand, they are \u2018cyber-connected\u2019 but can\u2019t connect on a \u201chuman\u201d level.<\/p>\n<p>The teens on the other hand are saying that their parents are \u2018old school\u2019, irritating because they complain and nag about their phones all the time, and don\u2019t understand their lives.<\/p>\n<p>So how do we avoid the struggle (gridlock) and engage with each other to turn it into a positive experience for all?<\/p>\n<p>Research has shown that technology will impact human behaviour in two major ways:<\/p>\n<h2>Cognitively<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The internet is becoming our external brain, we don\u2019t have to memorise information just be able to navigate it.<\/li>\n<li>We will need to become agile and quick-thinking analysts, who have access to collective intelligence.<\/li>\n<li>In future, our downfall may be our quick, shallow decision making, rather than in-depth critical thinking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Emotively<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>We are replacing our emotions with emoticons.<\/li>\n<li>We are \u2018hiding\u2019 our true emotions.<\/li>\n<li>We can \u2018block\u2019 others, rather than deal with conflict in an interpersonal \/ \u2018real life\u2019 manner.<\/li>\n<li>We are empowered to decide who we want to engage with and not, allowing us more power and influence in terms of our social networks and interpersonal relationships.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Despite our resistance to technology, we also need to realise that the world is always changing. <em><strong>W<\/strong><strong>e need to adapt!<\/strong><\/em> Forecasters predict that the Technological jump between 2015 and 2035 will be huge, with some elements of our world changing beyond recognition, while others will stay reassuringly (or disappointingly) familiar.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Let\u2019s think back to <strong>1995<\/strong> when we still worked in cubicles and had our desktops. There was no taking work home, touch screen phones or flat screen TVs; people laughed at the idea of reading electronic books, and watching a home movie meant loading a clunky cassette into your VCR.<\/li>\n<li>Think <strong>2030<\/strong>. We will be living in a smarter and automated world, think of 3D food printer chefs, robot counsellors, global system architects, black hole researchers etc. Some innovations we might not notice, while others will knock us sideways, changing our lives forever.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Our question is this:\u00a0 is what we as parents find frustrating (e.g. tablets, smartphones etc.) not actually our teens gearing for the future? And that possibly our role as parents needs to change from policing technology usage to developing our teen\u2019s abilities to use technology in a safe and efficient manner?<\/p>\n<p>Remember: your teen is growing up with technology, it&#8217;s all they know.<\/p>\n<p>Take a moment and think about how you think about technology. How can you collaborate rather than berate?
