Not crafty-sneaky. Crafty-artsy. What\u2019s more, in the holidays I would rather <\/span><em style=\"color: initial;\">die<\/em><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\"> than have to pretend to be a unicorn-astronaut-photographer one more time. I inevitably get the words or actions \u2018wrong\u2019, I get shouted at, and then everyone gets cross. So: crafts are the answer. And the more organised I am, the more likely my 6-year-old is to get drawn in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If, like me, you can\u2019t face another game of Pretend, why not try some of these? (As you\u2019ll see, the theme of these activities is, loosely, circles, and specifically doughnuts, and I\u2019m a big fan of crafting with waste materials.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>GLITTER DISC FISH (ages 4+)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This one is great, because we have a file of old CD-ROMs from a million years ago and I\u2019m convinced they sit in landfills forever if not re-purposed.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>You\u2019ll need:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2-3 old CDs or DVDs<\/li>\n<li>Glitter or glitter glue<\/li>\n<li>Permanent markers<\/li>\n<li>Craft glue\/mod podge<\/li>\n<li>Cardboard or paper<\/li>\n<li>Sticky tape<\/li>\n<li>Safety scissors (or blade for mom)<\/li>\n<li>Googly eyes or bottle tops<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Next steps:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Let the kids apply glue to the back of the CD, leaving the middle portion open. Alternatively, they can draw scales onto the CD with a marker.<\/li>\n<li>Sprinkle glitter generously onto the glue and leave to dry for a short while.<\/li>\n<li>Trace and cut out the mouth, fins and tail from cardboard or paper and attach with sticky tape. Smaller kids may need help with this part.<\/li>\n<li>Stick on the eyes using craft glue, and leave to dry for a few hours.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><br \/>\nDOUGHNUT SPRINKLE GAME\u00a0(ages 3-5)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This one is a cute way to teach counting and numbers. Take a look.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>You\u2019ll need:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/app.box.com\/s\/tacnp4ovrebatllz65nqpig6hx9h7s2v\">free printable<\/a><\/li>\n<li>A laminate sleeve (optional)<\/li>\n<li>An eraseable marker (optional)<\/li>\n<li>2 dice<\/li>\n<li>Buttons, sequins or sweets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Next steps:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>First download this <a href=\"https:\/\/app.box.com\/s\/tacnp4ovrebatllz65nqpig6hx9h7s2v\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free printable file<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Grab some dice and\u00a0a handful of bright buttons, sequins or sweeties, and find a good place to set up shop.<\/li>\n<li>One at a time, have the children roll the dice, identify the number, and place the correct amount of \u201csprinkles\u201d\u00a0on the doughnut.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat or change it up as you see fit. It requires a piece of thick cardboard from a box or any other stiff waste paper, cut to resemble a doughnut, with a\u00a0hole that\u00a0can accommodate 15-20 pencils. Let your little one colour and decorate the doughnut, and then you can begin to play.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>You\u2019ll need:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A piece of stiff cardboard (up to A4 size)<\/li>\n<li>Scissors (or blade for mom) to cut the doughnut hole<\/li>\n<li>Kokis, crayons, pencils, glitter or stickers to decorate<\/li>\n<li>15-20 pencils<\/li>\n<li>2-4 players<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>How to play:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Gather all of the pencils, put them through the hole, and make them stand. (You may have to try this a few times to get it right.)<\/li>\n<li>Instruct each player to pull out one pencil at a time.
