How many ways can you say, ‘This is a gorgeous book\u2019? How many ways can you say, \u2018It couldn\u2019t have come a moment too soon for South Africa\u2019 and \u2018I want to read it to my daughter every day, forever\u2019? I wonder if you know?<\/span><\/p>\n

In case you haven\u2019t gathered from my enthusiasm, I absolutely love Refiloe Moahloli\u2019s debut children\u2019s book How many ways can you say Hello<\/em>?<\/p>\n

It is clever, fun to read, rhythmic, inclusive, and magnificently illustrated by the ultra-talented Anja Stoeckigt. It also features one of the prettiest spreads I have ever seen, featuring proteas. (Tip for author: Make that spread a poster!)<\/p>\n

What\u2019s it about?<\/h2>\n

Well, Sara starts at a new school. Loads of things are unfamiliar and mysterious, but she\u2019s most perturbed by the fact that she doesn\u2019t understand all of the languages being spoken. She worries about being able to make new friends, when she doesn\u2019t even know how to say Hello in another tongue.<\/p>\n

Mrs Hubble, Sara\u2019s teacher, suggests that Sara make this quest her holiday project, and off she goes in a hot air balloon to meet new people in unfamiliar places, and to learn their unique greetings.<\/p>\n

Spanning areas in South Africa where Venda, Afrikaans, Xhosa, Swati, Zulu, Tsonga, Ndebele, Pedi, Tswana, Sotho, and English are spoken, Sara\u2019s journey introduces her \u2013 and her new friends \u2013 to 11 ways to say Hello.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a nice extra touch for parents\/grandparents\/care-givers who aren\u2019t sure how to pronounce \u2018Hello\u2019 in all 11 official languages: a CD of the text, narrated by the author, who offers authentic pronunciation.<\/p>\n
