During this 3-day workshop, we will be building electric motors, electrochemical cells and learn how to wire NO and NC switches. The purpose of these workshops are to open up the beauty of Science and Technology and
to give students practical support re the school curriculum.

Dec 10: How to build an electric motor. By building this model, we discover that electrical energy converts into mechanical energy, and that electricity and magnetism are closely related.

Dec 12: What is electricity and can I generate it myself? Build an electrochemical cell and discover that electrical energy can be generated from a chemical reaction!

Dec 14: Each time I open the refrigerator door to get a snack, a light on the inside turns on. How does that work? Find out what a NO (normally open) and NC (normally closed) switch is by learning how to wire these two switches. Tell a friend.

Fischertechnik Robotics is unique because it firstly allows the student to construct a variety of models with components such as building blocks, electrotechnical components (actuators and sensors) and a controller. The computer software and the ROBO controller are then used to teach students to write a control program that consists of various elements. With fischertechnik's Eco Technology, students learn more about renewable energy by using wind, water and sun to power the models they have built. Tell a friend.

Simple Machines:  The lever:  Levers are simple machines which create mechanical advantage to help us do work, e.g. move heavy things. Students build models of levers with fischertechnik as well as life sized levers with materials in and around the house. We discover that levers have a fulcrum/pivot point, load and effort arm and we see what happens when we manipulate the positions of these three points. Tell a friend.

The Human structure and shape is closely related to Science and Art. Our bodies are the pinnacle of adaptive mechanisms, and for the duration of our holidayworkshops, we are taking a close look at the following:
the hinge mechanism of the jaw;
elbow leverage;
pulleys of shoulder girdles;
hinging and leverage of the elbow;
pulleys of the hip joint;
mechanics of rotation of the knee joint;
pulleys of the leg and ankle joint

During the first session, students build different fischertechnik models to represent each mechanism and to better understand the underlying physics principles.

During our art session, geo-scientist and artist, Bokka du Toit, guides the students to translate these principles creatively onto paper and recreate it in wood. Tell a friend.
