Remedial School for Kids with wide spectrum of Learning Difficulties
Our school is situated on 3 ha in the country near Dainfern, off Cedar Road - Broadacres is 3 min away. HeronBridge is just down the road from us too. We cater for children who have learning difficulties and/or learn differently and need a small environment in which to flourish. We accept high functioning children on the autistic spectrum and CP learners. We offer intensive remedial teaching, accommodate homeschoolers, help with auditory processing problems & offer a number of therapies. We currently offer grades R to 9. Grades 7,8 and 9 form part of the Junior High School Phase. Older learners can do their A+ computer training with us to leave school with a qualification.
School curriculum
* we follow the curriculum as set out by the GDE. We liaise with ISASA and are an independent or private school. We supplement with the IEB curriculum.
* individual education programmes are designed for children who need a special learning programme to catch up or close gaps in their existing learning
* therapy is built into our daily programme so that we can give as little homework as possible.
Our weeks are jam-packed. We learn in a nurturing environment with caring teachers and staff. We bake and cook, we garden and look after our animals. In Social Sciences we build continents, volcanoes, models and hot air balloons. We do experiments and create works of art. We sing, dance and act. Our computers are used to learn. We play soccer and jump on the trampoline. We swim and ride mountain bikes. We explore and build go-karts in Technology. We have a Market Day each year where all are welcome and can join in fun activities. Each term we go on educational outings and every year we go on a tour.
Therapy Services Offered:
* counselling is free during school hours or when convenient.
* assessments can be arranged at school, comprehensive brain training & integrated movement therapy
* intensive AIT, Audiblox and other programmes available.
* Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy, School Educational Psychologist on site.
Remedial focus
We currently offer intensive Remedial Therapy for children with the full gamut of learning difficulties like ADD/ADHD, Dyslexia, CAPD, Autism, CP and other barriers to learning. The current teacher-child ratio is 1:6. We assess each child and then devise an Individual Education Plan for each, addressing their strenghths and weaknesses daily. To save on costs, we use the ILT method every morning to work on weaknesses. We work closely with neurologists, OT's and other professionals. Facilitation can be arranged where needed. We use a team approach. Our school has also started using the latest neuroscience programmes which are highly effective in treating most learning difficulties within a few months. We also teach Life Skills. Each child has a garden which they tend to as part of the curriculum. The children cook and bake to learn life skills. We have pets on the premises which we use to interact with the children. They play a therapeutic role. We use a learning-through-play approach with the younger children. A thorough junior primary syllabus is followed. Therapy in the outdoors work well for our children. We are always expanding our outdoor therapy playground. Parents are welcome to visit our school.
