Soweto children's orchestra
We give children the opportunity to learn an orchestral instrument including guitar, recorder and piano
When they come to us we help them choose the appropriate instrument to start with. Once they can play we organise them into ensembles and finally graduate into the fuller orchestra. They also paricipate in exams with the Royal School of Music and partiicpate in public performances.
Music classes
Children of Soweto learn how to play classical instruments together in an orchestra and then perform. They perform in the community, participate in fundraising projects and accompany choirs. Our students come from the music conservatory ACOSA (African Cultural Organisation of SA).The African Cultural Organisation of South Africa " acosa" is an NGO and has run music literacy for over 40 years. This organisation is based in Soweto and runs music classes for school teachers and recorder classes in 4 schools there, including 1 in Sebokeng and 1 in RURAL Stinkwater outside Hammanskraal. The Soweto Music Conservatoire admits up to 120 children. They learn music theory, instruments of the orchestra; violin,viola,cello,woodwind and brass. The learners write music examinations with Royal Schools of Music-London. There are 10 music trainers and trainee trainers made up of advance learners .
*Soweto Youth Orchestra is made up of 40 players of the music conservatoire. Conductor is Michael Masote. This group performs locally and outside the boarders of SA.. Music played includes serious classics, African classics, and accompanies choirs in works like G Handel's Messiah, J Witty's From Manger to Cross etc. The Orchestra breaks into smaller ensemble and the most successful is the Soweto Youth String Quartet which performs at Business events, government and social gigs. Currently,Soweto Youth String Quartet has been invited 3 times in 2007 to perform at Presidency including dinner for the Chinese President's visit.
