Theatre Productions for kids and Families

Now in its 11th year as the operating company, “the Civic” - which morphed into the more street-wise and accessible Joburg Theatre in 2009 - has become one of the acknowledged success stories of Joburg City’s corporatisation policy. Still under the leadership of Bernard Jay, the complex’ largest auditorium, re-named The Nelson Mandela Theatre, regularly sees over 75% of capacity audiences and remains open a minimum of fifty weeks in each year.

Joburg Theatre is also permanent home to The South African Ballet Theatre, Jill Girard and Keith Smith’s Peoples Theatre Company - performing throughout the year to children between the ages of 3 and 15 - and one of the country’s most respected community development projects in the arts, the tiny ‘black-box’ theatre known as space.com.Joburg Theatre has eight hospitality venues available for exclusive hire.
They range from ten-seat dining rooms to 200-capacity cocktail lounges – each one offering a different choice for your entertaining.

Please convey our sincere complements to the cast of Beauty and the Beast. We saw the show with our Grandsons on Sunday, and loved every minute of it. So professional, entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable. We will absolutely be flying up from Plettenberg Bay to see Shrek next year with the boys! Congratulations and best wishes from us all.

The Ilan Smith Show at the Joburg Theatre was amazing.
It was funny because Ilan tried to lighten the mood. It was fascinating because the impossible was made possible on stage.

Hi there

We recently took the kids to see the play African adventure and I realy wanted to share our experience with your readers- all I can say is WOW!!! What a fabulous play. My 4 yr old, 11 yr old and us “ the geriatric parents” all had a wonderful time. First off as we arrived there is an “interest table” in the foyer with all sorts of fossils/skulls/bones/pictures as well as a game ranger on hand to answer all questions popping out of enquiring minds- we could barely drag the kids away for the start of the play. The play itself was fabulous, the puppetry professional and there was enough “funny” to keep the kids and adults alike in stitches. Then of course we had the moral story of protecting our rhino against poachers- so well done, it would be wonderful if all schools could organize a viewing for their learners. The best part- the play was only 60minutes long ( no interval) and no time to get bored for a second!
Congratulations to all the cast and crew- I look forward to many more productions like this.
Many Thanks
