Fully REGISTERED Remedial School for Kids with a wide spectrum of Learning Difficulties

Our school is situated on 3 ha in the country near Dainfern, off Cedar Road - Broadacres is 3 min away. HeronBridge is just down the road from us too. We cater for children who have learning difficulties and/or learn differently and need a small environment in which to flourish. We accept high functioning children on the autistic spectrum. We are the only school in SA able to offer the Scientific Learning neuroscience programmes to all children - not limited to our school's learners as it is computer based and can be done anywhere.
We offer intensive remedial teaching, accommodate homeschoolers, help with auditory processing problems & offer a number of therapies.

We have our own therapists and educational psychologist as well as teachers with many and varied areas of expertise.

We offer Art,Drama,Ballet,Music - key board and guitar as well as voice, soccer, swimming, horse riding etc.

We currently offer grades R to 9. From 2014, we offer all the grades up to matric or grade 12. Grades 7,8 and 9 form part of the Junior High School Phase. Grades 10 to 12 form the Senior Phase. Older learners can do their A+ computer training with us to leave school with a qualification.

School curriculum

* we follow the curriculum as set out by the GDE. We liaise with ISASA and are an independent or private school. We supplement with the IEB curriculum where necessary.
* individual education programmes are designed for children who need a special learning programme to catch up or close gaps in their existing learning
* therapy is built into our daily programme so that we can give as little homework as possible.

Our weeks are jam-packed. We learn in a nurturing environment with caring teachers and staff. We bake and cook, we garden and look after our animals. In Social Sciences we build continents, volcanoes, models and hot air balloons. We do experiments and create works of art. We sing, dance and act. Our computers are used to learn. We play soccer and jump on the trampoline. We swim and ride mountain bikes. We explore and build go-karts in Technology. We have a Market Day each year where all are welcome and can join in fun activities. Each term we go on educational outings and every year we go on a tour.

Therapy Services Offered:

* counselling is free during school hours or when convenient.
* assessments can be arranged at school, comprehensive brain training & integrated movement therapy
* intensive AIT, ILT and other well researched programmes available.
* Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy, School Educational Psychologist on site.

Remedial focus

We currently offer intensive Remedial Therapy for children with the full gamut of learning difficulties like ADD/ADHD, Dyslexia, CAPD, Autism, CP and other barriers to learning. The current teacher-child ratio is 1:6 or 1:8 depending on the learners. We assess each child and then devise an Individual Education Plan for each, addressing their strenghths and weaknesses daily. To save on costs, we use the ILT method every morning to work on weaknesses. We work closely with neurologists, OT's and other professionals. Facilitation can be arranged where needed. We use a team approach. Our school has also started using the latest neuroscience programmes which are highly effective in treating most learning difficulties within a few months. We also teach Life Skills. Each child has a garden which they tend to as part of the curriculum. The children cook and bake to learn life skills. We have pets on the premises which we use to interact with the children. They play a therapeutic role. We use a learning-through-play approach with the younger children. A thorough junior primary syllabus is followed. Therapy in the outdoors work well for our children. We are always expanding our outdoor therapy playground. Parents are welcome to visit our school. Please make an appointment.

Lethabo has been at Chrysalis for almost a year now, and she loves it there. Before we came she dreaded doing schoolwork and books in general, but now she loves reading and learning. When I speak about the vast improvement she has made in such a short amount of time, to people, its actually emotional.School was a traumatic experience because we started at a mainstream school for Gr R and 1. Lethabo struggled with concentration and still does, so she was not able to cope at all in her old school, but at Chrysalis this is understood and the school allows her to be herself and facilitates her learning in a different way. I am really thankful to the school and what is has done for us. Debbie and Chune are the sweetest, most caring and dedicated people I have met in a while. They love the children and the children in turn love them to bits. Thank you so much to you both, may you do for others what you have done for us. Ke a leboha.

Daniel has been at Chrysalis Academy for two terms, finding this school has been a God sent miracle. Daniel aged 11 has had many home tutors and has attended many so called schools for special needs children without any success. For the first time Daniel is truly happy to attend school daily, his social skills have improved drastically and he is strides ahead academically. He is really a "new" child since joining Chrysalis Academy.
The team at the Academy make a truly concerted effort to nurture and make allowances for Daniel's special requirements. He absolutely adores Chune and Debbie and his fellow scholars.
My wife and I are eternally grateful for the love, nurture and stability and secure environment that Daniel enjoys at Chrysalis Academy. Thank you so much and God bless to all the staff and other children for making Chrysalis Academy the wonderful school and home that it is.

Alexa is been at Chrysalis Academy for a year now. I have never seen my daughter so happy. She loves the calm country environment and her teacher knows how to deal with her need to unwind and self-regulate. Having a spectrum of autism and ADHD, although she is able to concentrate for quite a while, she to go for a run when necessary. The individual attention is just perfect for her and we are so happy with her progress overall. Thank Chune and Debbie for your passion, dedication and love for our children.
