The Voortrekker Monument
The great grey colossus can be seen from all directions as you near Pretoria. The massive Voortrekker Monument, built in honour of the Voortrekkers (Pioneers) who left the Cape Colony in their thousands between 1835 and 1854. A visit to the Voortrekker Monument Heritage Site promotes and develops an understanding and appreciation of South Africa and its rich cultural heritage. Schools are encouraged to visit the site for a memorable experience. The Monument and Museum have qualified educational officers, as well as trained full-time and part-time tour guides available. Programmes are adapted according to the school's needs and cater for pre-school, primary school and high school learners. The educational programmes target the Human and Social Sciences learning area, but the other learning areas of outcomes based education can also be incorporated into the programmes. Visitors may also enjoy an ox wagon ride or go for a ride on horseback.
