Winners of the 2009/2010 National Science and Technology Award for innovative science communication to a mass audience, the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre is the largest science centre in Southern Africa offering over 300 world class science exhibits.

Our collection of interactive exhibits housed in the Old Electric Workshop in Newtown Johannesburg provides hours of fun for kids and adults of all ages to discover, explore and play with science and technology. From LEGO pits and mini-construction sites to understanding the principles of electromagnetism, the exhibits cater for curious minds of all ages.

Do visit the Science of Soccer – the World’s first completely soccer themed science exhibit developed by Sci-Bono and built in South Africa.

Science Themed Birthday Party

Celebrate your childs birhtday at Sci-Bono with hours of fun in a world class science centre.All birthday parties include:
• A guided tour of the centre,
• A 15 minute science show,
• A dedicated party co-ordinator,
• A free science gift for the birthday child
• 2 hours in the birthday party venue and
• Free entrance to the centre for all party guests.

We cater for children from age 3 – 12. For children aged 8 – 12 yrs, the guided tour of the centre can be substituted for a Treasure Hunt. The party venue accommodates a maximum of 50 people, including parents.

Excellent value for money! My boys particularly enjoyed the building site and the interactive soccer floor! Definitely a place we'd go to over and over again.

I spent Friday afternoon at your establishment and was blown away by the best kept secret in Joburg. I cannot stop talking about it, we recently spent some time at the Smithsonian institute in Washington DC and this is better and more interactive than anything we experienced there. This is more than a world class institution and I found the staff to be friendly and knowledgeable. I was so proud to be a South African. We will be regular visitors in future.

This is a great spot for children on a rainy day. At present it seem to be free on weekends. We just wish that supervision was better as some items have been removed and presenters lacked confidence. Perhaps each presenter should have a designated area, encouraging more confident in dept knowledge and pride in ensuring items are not removed. Missing items should be replaced. Both my 4 year old and my older nephews (12 and 14) could enjoy this outing.

Sci-Bono responds; Thanks to all who have the time to post reviews - your comments are valuable and appreciated. To respond.....
(1) It can be cold inside in winter.Our underfloor heating will only be ready when our new east block building is completed in about July 2008.(2) The popular Murray 7 Roberts construction site for little visitors has not been removed but has been moved upstairs for the duration of the Science Tunnel's stay. It will be replaced on the ground floor at the beginning of August. We have had to cut back on the number of wheelbarrows available in the temporary upstairs site as the space is somewhat smaller and safety is therefore a concern. We are also planning a brand new interactive set of exhibits for younger visitors that explores energy and the safe use of electricity. We hope to have it installed by year end.

Yes, the Science Tunnel is very interesting but 2 words of caution - very cold inside -take gloves & jackets, also better for older children. Younger children welcome but there is not much at their height or interest level. Also be warned,the fantastic Murray & Roberts construction site that they normally adore has been removed to make space for the exhibition.

Just imagine a science museum you have to drag your child away from. This is it. A fantastic interactive, hands-on place for children to play and learn. Highly recommended
