Lory Park Zoo- great day trip

Educate, experience, enjoy!

If you have ever wondered what it might be like to have your own private zoo, then visit Lory Park in Midrand, a haven nestled between Johannesburg and Pretoria.

It began as an avian education centre started by Eddy Van Eck. Lory Park differs from conventional zoos because it strives to provide visitors with safe hands on encounters,
as part of its conservation endeavours. Lory Park has since expanded to cater for an assortment of exotic and indigenous mammals, reptiles and birds.

The zoo participates in several CITES 1 breeding programs. The Ocelot, Siberian Tiger and Southern ground hornbill are just some of the critically endangered birds and mammals
who call Lory Park their home.

A personal approach to zoo keeping make Lory Park a terrific place for a family outing. Children and adults alike, will especially enjoy socialising with the birds in the tea garden or playtime with our cubs when available.

During school holidays children are welcome to attend ranger days where they are able to learn about and participate in wildlife care.
Ranger days: R160pp includes lunch from 8:00 to 16:00. Tuesday to Thursday.
Community Service: R120pp from 7:30 to 16:00 Tuesday to Friday.

I visited the Lory park Zoo a month back with my 3year old and we had such a wonderful time. It is so conveniently situated and not too big to walk around especially if you have smaller kids. Large variety of animals and the chance to play with lion cubs is so special. Although we have visited many other Zoo's its the first time my daughter asked me to take her back there this weekend. A must visit for families. I will be a regular visitor. It certainly is a Zoo touched with warmth and love.

I took my daughters aged almost 2 and 11 on 27 December. We had a wonderful time. It is just the right size- you don't have to walk far, yet you see a lot of animals. My 2 year old doesn't like big places with many people, so she really enjoyed the intimate feeling.
We went to the PTA Zoo the day thereafter and although we had fun, my 11 year old commented that she enjoyed Lori Park more.
What I like about Lori Park, is that it is not in a bad area with parking problems like PTA Zoo, and it doesn't take all day to see animals- we spent 2.5 hours there, including having something to eat at the tea garden, and it was just enough for my 2 year old. Well done, Lori Park- keep up the good work!

Today I took my two boys out to Lory park, not expecting much. But to say its amazing is not touching it! My boys aged 2 and 4 got to feed the owls! We got close up to see tigers, lions, leopard, jaguars and so much more being fed! It was pleasant and such a nice family place I didn't have to worry about my boys not having fun! The R55 was nothing compared to the amazing fun we had! I would definitely love to go back again, this time with more people! Thank you for making this day so special for me and my children. P.S feeding the owls was the best part for all of us!
